Green Mountain giveth

WTF windy and wintry Green Mountain 5-mile-plus

It was hard to know what to expect after Tuesday’s terrible conditions (though you know what they say about a “bad day” on the trail). 

Well, there was no confusing today for a bad day by any measure. For starters, conditions couldn’t have been more perfect! After enjoying the newness of the Florida Lot on the southeast side of Green Mountain, I went back today with the intent of exploring more of the back path to the east. Turns out it meets with Green Mountain Trail about 1 very steep-ass mile up. Once I got to GMT, the northeast trail to the radio tower was in better shape than I expected, what with the packed snow and me with serviceable screw shoes. Realizing I may be in the middle of a new-to-me segment, I feel like I pushed pretty hard to the radio tower, where I naturally decided that I may as well just summit. So I stood atop Green Mountain for the second time in three days, but today was so much better and more mild. Just a wisp of wind and temps just cool enough to prevent overheating but warm enough for a thin shirt and shorts.

I looked around and saw no one, so I took a quick whiz at the top, then turned around and headed back down.

Definitely hit the jets a bit on the descent, particularly that last very-steep mile I mentioned earlier. Perhaps the hardest downhill I’ve run in a long time as you can go as fast as you want, so long as you can keep your feet. The terrain did its best to beat me. Luckily, I prevailed. 

Once I got back to the lot I had time to spare so I headed west to one of my favorite little lookouts and came crack. Consequently, this was the only muddy trail I encountered, and even then, it was more than navigable. Was truly pleasantly surprised, and my body appreciated the soft earth and packed snow. Grateful as always for Green Mountain.

Of note: Tied for 25th overall out of almost 700 on the uphill segment from bottom to the top, and firmly took the KOM for my age group out of about 50 runners. Excited to improve even more on this one, with a top 20 overall within reach!
