‍Route 2 in Jack Thurston's Lost Lanes Central book (there are currently five books in the series, 30-35 routes, each one is usually 25-50 miles and use quite lanes and some rough stuff sections), I've ridden 3 of Jack's routes before and this was easily as good, if not better than the others. I had the morning available but had to be back home at 15:30 so a shorter ride seemed perfect, I added an extra 12km loop at Hathersage to add in the climb up to Burbage (#128/200 in Simon Warren's Top UK climbs) and a British Cycle Quest ( location at Burbage Rock. I started the route partway through at Sparrowpit meaning I would finish with an ascent of the old broken road upto the top of Winnat's Pass.  Just after 9am I parked in a layby and set off wrapped up as it was only 2 or 3 degrees celcius, my first time in longs and winter jersey  since spring. The whole route was really pleasant but there was already a bit of climbing before I added the extra in. Out to Tideswell on well surfaces quite lanes, a mile or so through farmland was unfenced with loose cattle ambling around, luckily they were all really chilled and they didn't get spooked, neither were they inquisitive enough to take a closer look. A few sections of road I had only recently discover on the Marple Grimpeur rides this year and it was nice to recognise the odd section or bit of road sometimes that I'd recently ridden in the other direction. By starting at Sparrowpit I was on the high ground to start and had a great downhill to Hathersage, from here is was a tough 5km climb up to Burbage Rocks, fortunately the scenery was simply stunning in every direction, the sun was now out as well so it was definitely warm work. After some tech issues with internet access to verify what it was I was actually looking for at Burbage Rocks for the BCQ location I was able to ascertain the correct answer before heading for some downhill back to Hathersage. From here to Hope was plenty of gravel sections and I had a detour to the main road to get a photo of a road sign for a village called Shatton ( interestingly there were no big village signs at either end of the village. Back to the route with some more climbing to get over to Hope. My mind was already set on an egg bap and a coffee in Hope so I duly went to a cafe and ordered it only to find the only sell egg barms around these parts so I had to settle for that. I also took the opportunity to use the establishment's toilet to lighten the load for the final climb of the day. A bit more riding got me to the bottom of Winnat's Pass, all that was left was to ride to the top and then coast downhill to my car, how hard can it be? The old road was closed in 1979 after subsidence and there has been no attempt to recfity it in the intervening 45 years, neither has it fixed itself, so it is just closed to cars so you can walk or ride up it, traffic free. There are some sections that I am sure that even Adi Dean wouldn't be able to ride up so I had a few hike a bike sections on the way up. At the top of the pass it was literaly downhill for about 2 miles to the car. A great half day's exploring in the Peak District
