Apple Orchard is a local favorite as well as a great place to start for first timers in the backcountry.
Apple Orchard is a fairly large glade located skiers left of Middle Earth. There are a number of entrances and exits, making a “go as big as you want” type of glade. If you want to take the top entrance and ski it all the way to Castlerock Connection, you can do that. If you want to cut into the woods and traverse out after a few hundred feet, that’s also an option. This makes it great for first timers. The top fourth of the woods is a reasonably tight conifer glade, the rest is wider deciduous woods. When you are skiing the lower section, be mindful of the riverbed skiers left of this glade as it does not always freeze, stay somewhere between Middle Earth and the riverbed. Experts and first timers will be able to enjoy this glade, but it should still be treated like a backcountry line. It is not patrolled or routinely monitored. Written by Ryan Delena
