The approach to a backcountry hut with an abundance of touring opportunities.
Janet’s Cabin is an excellent ski hut near Copper Mountain Resort, with room for up to 20 guests. Its location at 11,600 feet, right at timberline in a broad basin, makes it suitable for all types of skiers and almost any snow conditions. For more information about the hut and making a reservation, see the [10th Mountain Division Hut Association](
The route mapped here is the approach from Copper Mountain Resort, which is not the only way to reach the hut, but is the most convenient. By presenting your reservation confirmation to guest services at Copper, you should be able to get a voucher for one free lift ride to access the approach. From the top of the lift, a little downhill into Guller Creek drainage is followed by a sustained but mellow skin up the valley to the cabin.
Ski touring options from the hut are many. The easiest and safest lines are the low-angle slopes just above the cabin, and the trees below. A moderate-difficulty option is to skin up to Searle Pass to the south. From there you can choose a moderate line straight down from the pass, or steeper stuff on either side. Advanced skiers can inspect lines on the the peaks above the pass, both of which surpass 12,500 feet. Keep in mind that venturing very far from the cabin in any direction requires knowledge and attention to snow safety, because all the surroundings are potential avalanche terrain.
