Alps Epic Trail Davos - IMBA Epic

One of the IMBA Worldwide Epic rides, this is one of the best bike trails in Switzerland

With mile after mile of singletrack, a cable car to reach the start and a typically efficient Swiss train waiting for you at the end, there can't be many better alpine bike rides than this. As one of only 50 International Mountain Bike Association "Epics", this is also a sought after tick for those who like to complete challenges. By the way, ticking all 50 of the Epics will involve significant travel across 3 continents so unless you've recently come into some money we can't recommend trying to do them all!

Start out by riding the Jakobshron cable car to its eponymous peak and enjoy the fabulous high mountain panorama from the top. Get straight onto the Jakobshorn to Sertig trail and shortly after passing a small lake the fun really begins, with an increasingly steep and rocky journey down into the valley floor. A brief section of pavement is then followed by a tough climb up the Sertig to Rinehorn trail through some fairly dense and quiet forests. The climb ends at a popular picnic spot where you may well find people drinking, barbecuing and enjoying the wonderful views.

Traverse the Rinerhorn ski area on a good trail and then get stuck into the undulating journey through forests and rocky sections which leads to Monstein. The views and ambience throughout the traverse are exceptional, and none of the climbs are overly long so you can enjoy your surroundings without needing to put in too much effort. If you reach Monstein and decide you've had enough for one day then you can catch the train back to Davos, but continuing along the trail is by far the better option (and the only one if you want to tick the IMBA Epic box!)

Leave Monstein behind and climb increasingly steeply to reach a shoulder descending from the Büelenhorn. Begin descending again on a fun and sometimes technical trail which crosses a series of gullies and drainages on its long journey down to the valley floor. Follow the river along the valley, crossing it over a couple of times en route, before making the gentle climb up to Filisur, where a train back to Davos awaits! Written by Charlie Boscoe
