Armstrong-Spiro Loop
Trail Running Route
Moderate
5.97 mi
1,058 ft
Sustained climb through leafy forest, then a fast descent with wide-open views over Park City.
This is one of the finest running loops on Park City Mountain. Armstrong Trail is a gradual climb on smooth singletrack, through shady forest of aspen and conifer, with occasional sunny patches of oak. It’s pleasantly cool in the summer, crisp and brilliantly colored in the fall. This trail is open to mountain bikes, but for uphill riding only (foot traffic can go up or down). The route mapped here takes HAM to link with Spiro, but the network of trails makes loops of various distances possible. For a shorter run, take Dawns Trail downhill. For a longer run, stay on Armstrong to Mid Mountain, then take that trail over to Spiro. The trails are well-signed at intersections, to make navigation easy. Spiro Trail switchbacks steeply down the mountain, sometimes in the forest but often on grassy ski slopes and shrubby hillsides. The views over Park City and the valley are amazing, when you can afford to look up from your feet. This is a popular downhill ride for bikers, so be prepared to share the trail. Spiro returns to the starting point of Armstrong, completing the rewarding loop. If you fancy some refreshments following your run, Silver Star Cafe is the place for a cold drink or meal on a sunny patio, and it’s right next to the trailhead. Sources: Written by Jesse Weber
