Plenty of gnar and flow on one of the best shuttle combinations on Mount Ashland.
Mt. Ashland is a paradise for enduro riders looking to rip endless shuttle runs. The best-known trail on Mt. Ashland is easily the flowy Jabberwocky trail. However, if you ask the locals what their favorite trail is, they often name the Time Warp trail. This epic shuttle run on Mt. Ashland combines these trails into a fantastic combination down the mountain.
The route mapped here connects Time Warp -> Marty's -> Lizard -> Jabberwocky.
Even with a shuttle gaining over a vertical mile, the ride still begins with a climb up to the top of Time Warp. You'll have to pedal around the backside of the mountain, but on the way up to the top of the trail, you'll enjoy panoramic views from the wide-open meadows, which will make you forget the extra work you're going through.
Time Warp is a black diamond descent with high-speed downhills with long sightlines. While some of the trails on Mt. Ashland are tight and twisty, the high speeds and wide-open ripping on Time Warp offer a breath of fresh air. The black diamond rating comes from the drops, rock slabs, and occasional rock gardens, but if anything, it's a light black rating. Most competent mountain bikers will have a blast on Time Warp, with the expert riders sending all of the hucks and the more timid riders opting for the alt lines.
After dropping out of Time Warp, it's a bit of easy pedaling along the dirt road to return to the main Mt. Ashland trail network. From the Four Corners, the route as mapped takes you down Marty's Trail.
Now Marty's is unequivocally the most technical trail on the mountain, earning its black diamond rating! The upper section of the trail is filled with massive gap jumps that are experts-only. However, they can all easily be bypassed. The middle section of Marty's drops into a steep rock garden descent with technical rock rolls. This is arguably the most technical rock feature on the mountain, earning this ride its "severe" rating. Finally, the rest of Marty's mellows out a bit as it reaches the top of Lizard.
Lizard provides a high-quality machine-built flow trail experience. These are the biggest and best berms on Mt. Ashland, so savor this excellent rip down to the top of Jabberwocky.
Jabberwocky is the ultimate classic trail on Mt. Ashland, providing something of an old-school flow experience. While the trail is smooth, fast, and flowy, with berms in most of the corners, this isn't a properly-designed machine-built flow trail. You'll still have to ride heads-up for the occasional awkward corner or section. But aside from those few weird spots, this is a hootin' hollerin' romp down the mountain that most any mountain biker is guaranteed to love! Written by Greg Heil
