A short, easy introduction to mountain biking in Cumberland Forest.
If you're a new mountain biker and are looking to dip your toes into the sport, Cumberland can be a great place to learn! This short 2-mile loop provides the perfect beginner-friendly taste of mountain biking right next to the trailhead.
From the trailhead, pedal up the dirt road a short way to pick up the Spanker trail on the left. Spanker is a non-technical singletrack trail on a mellow grade that will help you get a feel for what mountain biking in Cumberland Forest has to offer. After pedaling up a small rise, you'll roll down a small hill back toward a junction with the dirt road.
At the junction, take a right turn onto Kitty Litter and follow it to Space Nugget. This two-trail combination provides a short, flowy descent back down to the trailhead that is perfect for getting a feel for Cumberland mountain biking. On Kitty Litter, you'll encounter a few rocks in the trail, some low berms, and a few wooden bridges that are close to the ground. Practicing on these low-consequence wooden bridges will help build your confidence on manmade features.
Space Nugget continues the swoop and flow with a series of beautifully-sculpted back-to-back berms on delightful singletrack. This section of trail is a bit rootier than Kitty Litter, providing a slightly different trail character.
Before you know it, you'll be back to the trailhead. If you're still looking for more riding, try stepping up with [this figure-8 route anchored by Missing Link](
