Lucky Peak Loop from Highland Valley

Trilho de bicicleta de montanha

Big vertical from the bottom to the top of Lucky Peak, with huge views the entire way.

This loop has some ass-kicking vertical topping one of the tallest mountains near Boise. The views are, of course, incredible from the mostly treeless slopes, and you'll have 3,500 feet of downhill to look forward to. This loop is actually on 4WD roads for much of the way, making the climb less tough than it could be. So while it may not be Boise's best loop in terms of trail quality, it's a must-do for anyone who likes to tag summits by bike. Starting at the trailhead on E Highland Valley Road, Highland Valley trail and Shaw Mountain Road make the ascent to Lucky Peak. Near the top, there is a small trailhead with a toilet, and just beyond you'll find the killer mountain-top view near some radio towers. The downhill follows Lucky Peak #8 road and Cobb trail, making a huge and fast descent with a bit of uphill in the middle to switch things up. Note that it's possible to ride this loop in the opposite direction, but not recommended. Cobb trail is steep and loose singletrack with crumbly rock sections that are fine going down, but a nightmare going up. It's also possible to shuttle this whole run, if you have a friend who wants to drive up Lucky Peak. You could get a ride all the way up Shaw Mountain Road from Highway 21, then blast all the way down and get picked up from Highland Valley trailhead. Shaw Mtn Road and Lucky Peak #8 trail are open to motorized May 1 - November 15, but use is generally light. Outside of that season, you won't contend with vehicles, but snow and mud will be an issue at the upper elevations. The best time to tackle the whole loop is a late spring day or cool summer morning, when trails are dry and temps are manageable. Expect a big burner of a day! Written by Jesse Weber
