Our longest day took us from the Ilion Marina campground to an amazing sunset over the upstate marshes at the end of the Erie Canal trail, setting us up for our hardest day (in terms of elevation gain) on Day 5. Day 4 was smooth sailing, though--7-8 miles at a stretch with 5-minute breaks, all launched at That Little Place on Main in Little Falls. It's the kind of place bike touring's all about (imho): filling whole foods served to a crowd of friendly locals curious to hear about your travels and tell you about theirs--after Tilda's in Kingston on Day 6, our trail-stop dining highlight. 

One negative: the Microtel in Latham near Cohoes and Troy. If you're going to settle for a hotel while touring, you want it to be worth it, right? The Marriott in downtown Syracuse and Heidi's Inn in Brewster were worth it: comfortable, great service, surprisingly affordable, and bike-friendly (in fact, we had great conversations over good breakfasts with other through-cyclists at both places). Not so much for the Microtel. It did, however, offer a single much-needed coin-op washer and dryer!
