At the start of my ride I took a sharp fast turn at the bottom of a hill and my wheel gave out while I was at 45° and I bit it. I must have been going 40 km/h and slid a few feet across the asphalt. My head slammed into the ground and smashed my glasses into my face. I just lay there dazed for a few seconds on the asphalt in the median cut-through. It really hurt. A guy stopped and helped me gather my things. I was really touched by this. He collected my bike and my headphones and I think I was a little disoriented but I feel very grateful for this touchpoint of humanity. I’m very glad I was wearing my helmet because without it my head would have smashed sideways into the ground. It's going to be an expensive fall: my glasses are bent and scratched and I tore through a nice jacket my brother gave me.

Headed into a city neighborhood known for crime and destitution. Wide streets, rotting buildings, men standing about; it's sad to see.
