It has rained on and off all night, and we pack up wet tents for the final 100k to Ushuaia. The route takes us along the lakeside, but ahead of us lies one final range of hills before we reach Ushuaia. The road has been cut into a steep hillside to gain the Paso Garibaldi, overlooking the lake far below. The road feels precarious, a vertical wall to my left and a precipitous drop to my right. It gives me the heebie jeebies just to be within a metre of the edge.

Beyond the pass, some 30k out from the end, we come across a commotion on the road. The emergency services are directing traffic. Several of our riders are stopped. Then we see it: a bike on the road. One of our group has been hit; clipped by a wing mirror at speed. He lies on the ground, his broken bike a short distance away. He is taken to hospital with concussion and cracked ribs. Somewhat bruised, he is able to join us for the final dinner later in the evening.

We ride on and over a low headland, and there before us is the sea: the Beagle Channel, leading to the Southern Ocean. The town of Ushuaia is built on the side of a steep hill overlooking the harbour. Here, a sign marks the End of the World.

And so after over 5000km, here on the shores of the Southern Ocean, our adventure comes to an end as all adventures must. Our thoughts must now turn to packing up, shortly we will be returning home.
