I almost pulled off the win today - wow, so wild and crazy being off the front solo from 17-4km to go when I was finally caught. 

Whoa! The start was wild and I slotted in the top ten to stay safe. I followed moves here and there to stay up front and out of trouble. With 20km to go there was a group consistently for the top ten and I was in it. Werner and Matter were making moves and I was slotted in third wheel following. Werner went wide on a loose turn and I rolled off the front. I put in a little effort to keep the pace high and when I looked back no one had followed and I was alone.

I was solo off the front from 17km to 4km to go - with 10km to go they brought me back to 15 seconds and I sat up once I saw them reeling me back in. I looked back one final time and it looked like they also sat up once I was back in sight so I put in another dig and went all in for the win. With 5km to go I still couldn’t see them as I crested the hill and started to think maybe I was going to become an Iceman. Over the next few hills, still couldn’t see them or hear the crowd cheering for them. Then suddenly, with 4km to go, I looked back and saw them flying up to me.

I slotted in 5th wheel behind Werner and Alexey put in one final dig with 3km to go that split the group into four leaders and a chase group of three with me dangling. I still thought we could catch the leaders so I pulled Wakeley along and he dropped me on the final climb along with one other rider and I hung on for 7th.

Wow! So wild, hard, and fun. My goal, honestly, was to win. Some of you probably didn’t or don’t think that’s possible, but I believed it and almost pulled it off today. I’ll be back!
