More Sanitas Scrambling

Best Sanitas route ever.

Sanitas with a side of scrambling.

Wanted to put in a strong effort to the summit of lone eagle, but the air quality at the trailhead was bad so figured I'd just jog to the lake. Lo and behold, I looked at the mountains a couple miles in and the air was clear. So I tried moving faster, but that only worked for a couple minutes because my right hamstring took offense. I don't know how to pace myself, so I went off hamstring pain.

I passed a few runners on the way up and they have kind words of encouragement. My route around Mirror Lake was kinda goofy, but I felt really good when the real climb out of the lake started.

Was in the zone and missed my turn for the summit bid. Luckily it was only a short backtrack, but I had to decide whether to keep following cairns ahead or cede the elevation I gained and go back to the route I know. I was a little bummed because I could tell from the tightness in my calves the toll the climbing was having on me.

When I went back down to get on the route I know, I felt good and gained the elevation again quickly. I altered my gait to rotate my hips and core more and my calves never felt tight again.

The sky was crazy and the wind was whipping, until about when I hit the summit. There it was calm and the sky was blue. On the way down I got all sorts of lost, but it was fine. Ran into a couple I passed on the way up and the guy said "I just have to ask you a question. You're really fast. Do you run Western States and stuff like that?" That made me feel good. Thank you stranger.

Then I noticed the smoke came back in and I slow jogged it out which was best anyway because the trail was crowded at that point. I talked to several people and spent a little time taking in the waterfalls on the way down. The best part of the day was probably the climb from the lake to the summit and the kind words. Other than my one missed turn, my route finding was good and it felt really good.
