Hall Sanders and I completed an adventurous 300k from St. Paul, MN, to Siren, WI, using Chuck Ryan's brevet/permanent route.   The first 160k went well - we started early (5a) and enjoyed cooler weather heading up to Osceola, WI and Balsam Lake, WI on the way up to Siren, WI.  The return leg was a lot tougher as temps reached a sticky 91 and a mild S wind stiffened up into an annoying head wind and we were reminded that this part of the ride was fairly hilly.  Hall and I have done a few tough longer rides (1000/1200k) together before so we did the smart thing - eased off and took extra 'heat' breaks for fluids and to cool off.  Luckily, 50 miles from the finish, we were doused by a 20 minute rain shower that  cooled us off, dropped the temps 20 degrees and made the final legs of the ride a pleasant cruise, especially after a key stop at the Dairy Queen in Osceola with 30 miles to go.
