My fastest 3 hours ever. Fitting that it also was my final 3 hours with Blue ...



   At the start, I had no idea what route I wanted to take. But as soon as I felt the cold wind on my MAJORLY undressed body, I decided it would be a good day to run it hard to generate more heat. So I divided the ride into 3 one hour segments: hour 1: "try to stay over 20" ; hour 2: "now keep it over 19"; hour 3: "now drag your ass home". Over the first hour, I watched the temperature drop from 34 to 30, and was doing everything I could to not think about my frozen knuckles. Reaching Fall City and seeing that the fog over the valley hadn't yet burned off, I decided to add a small loop around town to buy some time. Segment two was a shot up the valley, where I enjoyed seeing (and feeling) the temperature swing 10 degrees to finish at 41. The speed and warmth had me in rare form, such that the third hour segmenet involved no dragging whatsoever (in fact, a PR over the Novelty Hill crossing). I had so much left in the tank as I neared the end of the third hour that I was climbing a final hill at  It was at that speed that I rounded a corner of the trail to find a wandering cyclist directly in my path. I had one chance to avoid, and that was turning to the right. But if he is on the left instead of the right, which way do you think he's going to turn? That's right: left ... right into my path. The good news is that I managed to lean the bike such that the bikes hit head on, but I flew to the side, so the two bodies didn't collide. It was a clean roll, and my helmet never touched the ground. I have a couple of bruises, but my carbon frame Blue is TOAST. Bu-bye Blue. Over our 5K miles together, you have served me well!
