1st Overall 🥇Humidity, wet, slick slate rock, turtles, horse poop, hills, creek crossings, cramping, rocky ankle breaker rocks, ohh and spider webs. These words describe Rockwoods. Race started at 7am. Just enough morning daylight provided no need for a headlamp. Went out w/ JP for the first couple miles. Spider webs were terrible on the way out the first out & back. Grabbed a stick and played running with sticks for the first 4.5 miles. Got to the turn around and climbed out. Basically rocky atv trail. Took a right and dipped down onto the Green Rock Trail. Took in a Vanilla Bean GU at mile 7ish/1hr. Stopped at the first aid station to refill my 12oz. handheld with Heed electrolyte drink. Headed into Camp Wyham “roller coaster” section and felt good. Just tried to stay loose and smooth rolling with the flow of this section. Got to the 15 mile aid station filled up again and kept moving. Once I got on the main GRT out and back some rain moved in for a bit and made things slicker than snot. Those rocks got slick quick. The entire GRT Out and back I just felt off and didn’t feel smooth or fast. I don’t remember power hiking much last year. Had a Maurten gel at the turn around. Had a sal tablet every hour too. Got to the 25 mile aid station and was a bit crampy in my groin and calves. Still wasn’t moving or feeling good. Got back into camp Wyham and started moving a little better. Started to hear the roller coasters at Six Flags so I knew I was getting close. Right groin was really tweaking with every step up a rock. Got to last aid station and knew there’s only about a mile and half left. Rough day overall. Body just didn’t really feel great but you’ll have those. Congrats to everybody who battled some tough conditions on a very tough course.
