A beautiful day for an excruciating ride. The high elevation kept the temps below 80 for all but one hour of the day (dropping down to the James is when the temps were up at 85).

The majority of the climb was in the first half of this ride, reaching RAMROD total climb by the midpoint of the ride (summitting Apple Orchard). I was hoping this would result in a happy finish to the ride. But, in actuality, all of that climb at the start cooked my legs pretty good and I was limping by the time I go to Roanoke (35mi from the finish). I had my reunion buddies on standby in case I needed a bail out, but I was determined to finish this, as I knew I had plenty of time before sunset, so I could take my time.

In Roanoke, I tried to eat my last sandwich and my body was not allowing it. That happened at the EFI turnaround in RAMROD in 2014. I need to debug what causes that. I'm sure I had enough caloric intake on the ride. So not sure if it's a dehydration issue or just an overworked muscles issue.

I was using my "fractional distraction" method to keep spirits up: 1/10th in, 1/8th in, 1/6th in, 1/5th in, 1/4th in, 1/3rd in, 1/2 in, 1/2 left, 1/3rd left … I think it worked pretty good. For the last ten miles, I don't think I was thinking very straight.
