Today was the last day of this section, which has definitely been my favourite section so far. Not only have we had incredible alpine views and scenery all around, but we’re getting into some really rich forests and nice trails. A lot of Te Araroa further south was more of a “route” and less of a trail, and it was in very shrubby grassland ecosystems— we went a long time without seeing trees. That was beautiful in its own way early on in the hike but I certainly missed lush forests and big lakes to swim in! The trail out today was pretty easy going into St Arnaud, one of our last resupply towns on the trail. We sent ourselves a resupply box here and have a lot of sorting and logistics to work out for the next section, which will be our longest carry of the trip. Importantly, we also had our best meal of the trip so far at the Alpine Lodge tonight and, of course, ate some ice cream.
