It was super cold/freezing most of the ride.  The climb up to Dawson Saddle (past the road closure barrier) had long sections of light snow and black ice. I counted about 8 sections, each about 25 to 50 yards in length.  This made for a tricky descent on the way back. Despite our efforts to be careful, there was at least one crash on a slippery section.  In that one, a rider busted his saddle.   I mean, the saddle completely broke off the rails.  Damnedest thing I’ve ever seen. Fortunately, I had some strips of KT Tape with me and we were able to McGuyver a fix to hold the saddle in place so that he could ride back to the start.  

After my last crash I started carrying first aid supplies with me on these longer rides.  Who would have thought that the items in a first aid kit could be used to repair a bike, in addition to patching up road rash and things of that nature?

Probably, the wisest thing to do would have been to turn around when we saw the black ice and snow, but we were determined to get up to Dawson Saddle.  In the end, I guess I’m glad we persisted.  It was so beautiful up there today, but freezing cold.

Most of the climbing was done in Zone 2, with some tempo efforts.  Power meter batteries died at about mile 50 or so, so no power or cadence data for the second half of the ride.
