It just feels inappropriate being dressed like this. I should be in something dark with a capped sleeve.

Started an hour later than I wanted as usual. The strap on my shoe was breaking so I took a big wire tie with me. The strap is holding on by a thread but I’ve completed 2 centuries with it. It rained early. Not much rain but many of the roads were wet from previous rain. Was partly cloudy for a while and then full sun. The first rest stop was at someone’s house. They had a fire going and the most selection of food but still not much at all. That was the highlight of the day. The wind started after this stop and never stopped. For some reason there was a rest stop 5 miles later at mile 20 and then again around 33. 

Wind persisted for the next 30 miles!
15-25mph winds most of the day! N, NE, W, and the worst NW! There was no hiding from the wind but it was slightly better with trees around and on the up and downs which were all over the eastern part of the ride. Crossed route 13 a few times seemingly unnecessarily but I guess there was a good reason. Finally crossed route 175 which I remember as the road to Chincoteague. Was on Fleming for awhile and while there was a lot of traffic not nearly as much as 2016. Finally got to the northern most point almost in Maryland and headed West. Expected the wind to let up but it did not!!

Continued on to lunch around mile 53 where the sandwich wraps were good. Took a long break here. Shedded arm warmers as the temp got into the low 60s. Lunch was a festival last year. This year it was way laid back and I think the 100 mile folks had a different lunch stop vs everyone else. With the exception of there being less traffic overall this year, every aspect of last year’s ride was much better. The rest stops hardly had anything this year!

Continued to fight the swirling wind even headed south. Only really felt like I had the wind at my back for a few brief periods. The next rest stop was a long out and back to Saxis Island. 7 miles mostly into the wind headed west with an extremely windy section across the causeway for about 2 miles. Saw a few dead snakes and one live one on the road. Wound around Saxis for a while to *finally* reach the rest stop. Only one pair of riders ever passed me all day long. Average speed was hovering around 15 most of the day. Last year was 17!

Saxis had the only nice scenic views of the day. Once headed east I was really able to ride fast, got up to about 26 once, but soon after it was back to normal. 

The ride was really taking a toll and I neglected to take more butt butter. Lots and lots of rough roads!

For some reason they put the last rest stop with only 8 miles to go. The 20 miles between that and Saxis were rough. Had to just stop a few times. The ladies at the last rest stop were very nice but still not much there. It was here I learned that the ride dropped from 103 to 101 overall. There was a port o pot a mile down the road and since that was not needed the ride dropped from 8.5 to 6.5 miles after leaving the rest stop. 

The last part of the ride went through Onancock where it was tough to navigate. No fanfare at all at the finish. No start line. No finish line. The ride really seemed low budget. Paltry selection of food and drinks. No ride numbers. Seagull Century is a far better organized ride for only about $25? more. I may give the ride another chance next year but compared to last year’s right it was terrible.

Met up with Steve, Joe, and Bruce at the OT in Onancock after the ride.
