Very challenging day, but a successful and rewarding one. In the week leading up to Kodiak, organizers had to design new courses for all distances, moving the race to the north side of the lake due to damage caused by the Line Fire on the south side. No small feat, and they pulled it off well, wonderful job by the volunteers. Course changes resulted in a semi-loop-based format. Good mix of PCT single track and fireroads and a good dose of rocky terrain. Less vert, too, ~7,000 ft, compared to the usual 10,000 ft for the 100k, which made for a more runnable course. But I found it really difficult. I'm not yet accustomed to this distance and so much sustained running. Sometimes a nice steep hike in a race can be break, mix up the muscle engagement. But I had a lot going in my favor today and that starts with my fiancée Mel crewing me, ensuring I stayed on top of fueling, getting me a cheeseburger (to the wise, a boss move for an ultra), electrolytes, caffeine and all the love I could ask for. Paced the race well, staying conservative in the first 20mi, not joining passing groups. I stuck on the heels with other runners who had a similar plan and enjoyed some great conversations. Took extra long aid station breaks, let others catch up and pass, but the long play was the right one for me today. Ended up catching many runners in the last 10mi. Many painful miles, but purposeful. A sub-12hr 100k was my goal and I'm so happy to achieve it - 11:41:25 🦝🤙🍻👟
