So many noob mistakes…didn’t carb load properly, didn’t bring enough water which resulted in dehydration which caused cramping, and I didn’t check over the bike before leaving.  Turns out the drivetrain was screwed up, not shifting properly and grinding the gears.  Fortunately I met Randy, a wonderful fellow working on his truck who gave me some good old 10-W-30 motor oil to lube the chain and gears which allowed me to get home.

He also let me see his 1923 Ford pick up truck he’d restored; very cool!

So overall, some fun, lots of struggling and tons of lessons learned.
