First gravel race I’ve done that I didn’t start way too far back. First few miles are punchy and relatively rough so that was important. Stayed near the front and made it through the techy stuff in the front group of 9. 

About 10 miles of just chilling. No one wanted to work so it was pretty slow. Around 15, Turbo started rolling attacks making it hard again. I almost missed a turn and kind of sprinted to get back in. Right after another attack went, my legs felt completely gone for some reason. I’m not sure why, we were only like 45 min and I really hadn’t done that much work. No one was closing the gap and eventually another Turbo guy attacked across. I knew if they had 2 guys off the front the move wasn’t coming back so I went with even though my legs were still gone. Turbo guy jumped in my wheel and I completely blew myself up dragging him back to his teammate. Got close and he jumped around and a couple other guys (that I didn’t know I was towing) went too. I completely cracked and got dropped. Complete tactical disaster. 

After a minute or so I was able to get back into zone 2 and slowly tried to chase down 2 guys that couldn’t stick with the front group. I was slowly falling back and rode solo from like 15-30. Not a great time mentally. I was upset that my legs were so bad and that I had ridden so dumb. 

Eventually I looked back and there were a few guys catching up to me. I sat up and joined them. Thankfully there was one guy that seemed super happy to pull and he dragged us along (with a few pulls from others) for a while. Eventually we caught up to the 2 guys I was chasing earlier and made a larger group. I sat in the back most of the time but did take a few decent pulls. I was pretty mentally checked out and really just wanted to be done. I was also cramping pretty bad. No idea why, not working that hard, freezing cold, plenty of Roctane mix and a ton of carbs. 

Once we got back to the punchy techy part with 4 miles to go I went to the front and increased the effort a bit. I didn’t think it would do much but when I looked back there was only 1 guy with me. 

Kept grinding out what I could and hoped I wouldn’t get caught or fully cramp. Eventually the one guy jumped around me and I crawled in on my own. 

Overall a pretty disappointing day. The way my legs dropped off 15 miles in and then started cramping after 40 is confusing and discouraging. Dragging an attack back and blowing up after towing more people to the group was super stupid too. I am happy with how I was able to reset for the last 5 miles and grind at the end. And nutrition was solid. ~330g of carbs.
