TLDR: great day, big climb,  bike broke but got fixed and I had fun 😁

Long version: I’ve really been looking forward to today. Until recently I lived in Queenstown and worked regularly in Wanaka, but have never ridden the Crown Range (at 1076m NZ’s highest sealed road, which connects the two and which I used to drive regularly). But it was a bit more complicated than I expected. Riding out of Hawea my chain skipped a couple of times and then my drivetrain came to a crunching halt - something had broken in my rear mech. I shortened the chain to try and create a single speed bodge but couldn’t get it to hold so I scooted and walked to Albert Town bridge where within minutes  I managed to get a lift to Wanaka from a guy in a flat bed truck. A couple of phone calls and my bike was booked in to Outside Sports, where Ben, an absolutely brilliant bike mechanic, dismantled and repaired the derailleur, getting me back on the road by noon. I rode back the direct 6km to Albert Town and rejoined the course looping back along the lovely, longer lakeside trail. Then Wanaka again and the long long climb up Crown Range before a swooping descent to Arrowtown and my planned stop in Frankton just down the road from my old home. A brilliant memorable day and there can’t be a better place to have a serious mechanical than Wanaka.
