SmO2 data from yesterdays step and ramp test. Nirs sensor placement on vastus lateralis, half way between hip and knee

Picture 1: Full session. Clear decrease in SmO2 in both step and ramp test. Lowest SmO2 in step test 17% and 10% in ramp test

Picture 2: Both lactate and avg. SmO2 for each step. No increase in SmO2 during first steps, which is often postulated. Max SmO2 already occuring during fist step. In trained athletes with low subcutaneous fat, this is the most common profile. From data i have seen, SmO2 only increases in athletes with higher body fat, because sensor can only measure 15mm deep in tissue and therefore doesnt reflect muscle saturation in those athletes. Max SmO2 as a target during LIT sessions seems to be questionable.

Picture 3: SmO2 breakpoint during ramp test. Good agreement with LT2 from step test, both around 390 watts.

Picture 4: Watts / SmO2. Similar but not identical shape to lactate curve. Difficult to identify breakpoints

Picture 5 & 6: SmO2 Trends during each 5min step. A constant saturation below LT2 and a decreasing trend above LT2 is expected. Not quite the case in this test.
